Registration Errors and What They Mean

Questions and Answers:

I see open seats in a section of a course/class in WIN ~ why can’t I register for the class?

If the class has open seats, but there are students on the waitlist, the open seats are held for the waitlisted students. If the waitlist drops to zero OR the number of openings exceeds the number of students on the waitlist, you will be able to register for the class.

Why can't I sign up for this lecture or laboratory course?

It is most likely that you will need to sign up for both the lecture and laboratory courses simultaneously. This situation normally occurs when you are registering for a science course (Divisional IV:Chemistry, Biology, & Physics). To sign up for these courses simultaneously, please visit How to Add a Course or Multiple Courses Simultaneously via WIN.

I keep getting a co-requisite error, what does this mean and what do I do?

When a co-requisite error appears, it will display something similar to this “CORQ_BIO 213L REQ”. This indicates that the course that you are looking to register for has a co-requisite course (in this example BIO 213 has a co-requisite – BIO 213L). Keep in mind that this error normally occurs when you are registering for a science course (Divisional IV:Chemistry, Biology, & Physics). To sign up for these courses simultaneously, please visit How to Add a Course or Multiple Courses Simultaneously via WIN.

How do I join a waitlist?

If the course and section for which you are attempting to register is full, you will receive an “error” message stating that it is closed and indicating the number of students already on the waitlist.

*Example: “Closed – X Waitlisted” indicates “X” students are already waitlisted; you will be in the NEXT position.*

If you want to join a waitlist, follow these instructions:

  1. Login to your WIN account if you have not already done so.
  2. Select Virtual Campus.
  3. Click on Register for Classes using Course Reference Numbers (CRN).
  4. Enter the Course Reference Number (CRN) on the Add Classes Worksheet.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Submit.
  6. To be added to the waitlist, select “waitlisted” from the drop-down and click Submit.
  7. Check to make sure that the course appears under Current Schedule with a status of “Waitlisted.”

What happens when a seat in a course opens and I am on the waitlist?

When a seat becomes available, a notification will be sent to the WFU email account. The notification will indicate the course, CRN and the amount of time the student has to register for the available seat. Students MUST register themselves for the course after receiving a notification—they will NOT be automatically added! If a student does not register within the time indicated, s/he will be dropped from the waitlist and the next student will be notified to register for the course.

How often will I be notified of an available seat in the course I am waitlisted in?

Only one notification for each class will be sent.

I have been allowed to waitlist classes before, what is the difference now? What and why is it called ‘automated waitlist'?

Prior to Fall 2012 registration, students were allowed to “waitlist” a class, but no system was in place governing the priority of students on the list, or how a student might move from the waitlist into an open seat. “Automated Waitlisting” is totally transparent. A student on the waitlist can see his/her position on the waitlist and the order of the waitlist will be maintained. When a seat becomes available, a notification will be sent to the WFU email account of the student who is “position 1” on the waitlist. Students MUST register themselves for the course after receiving a notification. If a student does not register within the time indicated, s/he will be dropped from the waitlist and the next student will be notified.

Is there a limit to the number of classes/courses that I can waitlist on?

Yes, you may have no more than THREE waitlisted classes/courses on your schedule at any one time. Although the registration system will accept more than three, only the first three will remain (any course(s) added to the waitlist after the three will be automatically purged each night during the registration period).

Does waitlisting for a course count toward total hours?

No, waitlisted courses do not count toward your credit hours, overall credit hours or for any particular “round.”
Top of Page

Can I waitlist for a course if I don’t have the pre-requisites?

No, in order to waitlist you must meet all the requirements and pre-requisites to actually take the course.
Top of Page

Can I waitlist for a course if it causes a time conflict with another class or waitlist?

No, in order to waitlist it may not overlap with a registered class or another waitlisted section.
Top of Page

Can I waitlist for a course if I’m already registered in another section of the same course?

No, waitlisting is intended to help students get into classes for which they might not be able to register otherwise.
Top of Page

Can I add myself to more than one waitlist for the same course?

No, you may only be on one waitlist for any given course.
Top of Page

Is automated waitlisting available on ALL sections/CRNs/courses?

No, departments decide whether sections/CRNs/courses have waitlists or not; however, classes with co-requisites, such as lecture/lab combinations, never have waitlists.
Top of Page

Will I get a notification when I am dropped from my waitlisted course because my time has expired?

No, if you do not act within the time-frame identified in the notification, you will be dropped from the waitlist without further notice so the next student can be given the opportunity to register.
Top of Page

How much time do I have to act/register on the waitlist notification?

Notification periods are subject to change during the various periods of registration; however, the email notification will clearly state how long you have to act/register for the course. ALL notifications will be honored for their duration unless registration closes before they expire (i.e. due to the first day of class). Notifications may be valid for as much as several days (during “rounds”) or as little as one hour (before registration closes for the summer/winter break and/or before classes begin.

How can I check my position on a waitlist?

Checking your waitlist position:

  1. Login to your WIN account.
  2. Select Virtual Campus.
  3. Under Class Registration and Schedule, click on Student Detail Schedule.
  4. Look for Waitlist Position. If and when your position is “1,” you will receive the next notification if a seat opens up.

*NOTE: Waitlisted courses do NOT appear on your “Student Schedule by Day and Time.”*

If I am on a waitlist, what should I do?

Watch for your position number to change. When you are “position 1” on the waitlist, you will receive the next notification if a seat opens. Check your WFU email account often! If you receive a notification, it will indicate the course, CRN, and the amount of time you have to register for the available seat. You MUST register for the course after receiving a notification—you are not automatically added. If your notification expires the next student will be given the opportunity to register and you will lose your spot on the waitlist.

If I miss my chance to register and my notification expires, can I re-waitlist for the course?

Yes, but you will start at the last position again.
