Majors/Minors/Concentrations/Foreign Area Studies
Initial Declaration of a Program of Study (Major)
To declare a major a student must have completed at least 40 hours, not including hours in which the student is currently enrolled. Most students declare as sophomores early in the spring semester during a period known as Mass Declaration. Declarations are made by submitting requests in Workday. Exception: A student who wants to major in the School of Business must first complete an application. Please contact the School of Business Undergraduate Admissions for more information.
A student must declare a major prior to declaring a minor, concentration, or foreign area study.
Program of Study Requests after Initial Declaration of Major
Requests for a second major or a minor, concentration, or foreign area study are also made in Workday.
Students should request just one program of study declaration, drop, or change at a time.
It is recommended that students request program of study changes at least three weeks prior to registration for the next semester.
Only one bachelor’s degree will be conferred even if the student graduates with a double major in which one major is part of a B.A. and the other major is part of a B.S. The major that is designated as primary determines which degree is awarded. Requests to change which major is primary are made in Workday.
To graduate a student must satisfy one, and only one, of the following options:
- a single major
- a single major and a minor
- a single major and a double minor
- a single major and a triple minor
- a double major
- a double major and a minor
To graduate with option 4 or 6 a student must complete 135 hours instead of the usual 120 hours. Available majors, minors, concentrations and foreign area studies can be found here.
